Tips For Touring Assisted Living Facilities

Blog

When your loved one needs to go into an assisted living facility, you have a very important decision to make. As you tour different facilities, you will want to look for a number of things in the facility to determine if it is the right one for your loved one. Keep reading to learn a few tips as you move forward with your tours.

Look at How Clean the Facility Is

As you tour the facility, pay attention to how clean it is. Look at the furniture, floors, baseboards, windows, etc. Make sure to ask about the frequency of housekeeping in each personal living space. You should also request information about laundry procedures. Keep your nose open for any odors throughout the property. If there is a concentrated smell, then this is likely a recent incident. However, there is a bigger problem if there is an odor throughout the entire facility.

Eat a Meal While at the Facility

The experience in the dining room is a valuable one for those living in an assisted living facility. Therefore, when visiting these facilities, you will want to make sure to discuss the food choices, learn about the dining hours, and find out about the general procedures. While at the facility, make sure that you and your loved one are able to enjoy a meal. This will allow you to sample the food and meet some of the other residents.

Try to Visit on a Day With an Activity

Assisted living facilities often have activities throughout the month. Try to schedule your tour on a day when one of these activities is occurring so that you can see them in action. Take note of how many residents are attending the activity. Pay attention to whether the residents and staff member seem to be enjoying themselves. You should get a schedule of the activities and events that are held so that you can match them to the interests of your loved one. Find out if there are any out-of-the-facility trips that your loved one may look forward to.

Trust Your Gut

As you tour the facility, make sure that you consider how you feel about your loved one living there. Can you imagine him or her living there and being comfortable? Do the facility, residents, and staff seem open and friendly? Simply trust your gut when making your decision.
